The most meaningful gesture you can do for a small business owner other than utilize their services would be referrals. That is exactly how I was able to meet and photograph Maggie from Blair High School. A friend of hers that graduated a couple of years ago referred and Maggie liked what she saw on my website. Yay!
I absolutely loved all of Maggie's creative ideas for her session and how she wanted to bring her love of music, books and Dr. Pepper into her session! These were very simple little adds to her session, but a huge impact in her photos that shows who Maggie is as a high school senior. When I saw her outfit of the skirt and striped shirt, I knew that was the perfect outfit to shoot with her Dr. Pepper and taking her to a laundry mat, well why not?
Maggie had such different outfits that gave her a whole variety of looks for her session which made it fun to take her to different spots around town. The simple of layering the white vest with the old tires and cars made of a unique look. She was styled for that area perfectly!
When my seniors arrive for their session we talk through all of the outfits they brought and I decide where we will shoot each outfit. I felt this t-shirt with the flannel shirt tied around her waste was a perfect outfit for the urban downtown spot as well. I try to utilize just not pretty buidings, but also just having a senior sit down on the curb and take some photos there. I mean, we have all sat on a curb in the middle of downtown right? I know we can't this year, but that totally reminds me of watching parades as a kid. Using everything around you is key during a photoshoot. As long as there is good lighting, I am going to put a client in all sorts of spots that others may not think of.
We were able to get some shots out at Lake Wanahoo that evening, but due to the wind being cray cray we ended up back in town for the rest of Maggie's session. Nebraska weather can sometimes be the determination of when and where I will be able to photograph my clients, unfortunately. Many times, you can use the wind to your advantage which we were able to for a few shots, but there are times when you do not want all of your photos to have wind in the hair especially when it isn't really a Beyonce look but more of a helicopter taking off look. :)
After getting a few images out at the lake, we headed back into Wahoo and to a park that I like to shoot in because it has some great lighting with some fun big sidewalks and a grassy area with trees. This is where Maggie brought her love of music into the session plus we did a few more images of her in her dress that she had picked for the lake. When I know I have a lot of great images of my high school seniors I liked to photograph them while they play a little. It might be just running their fingers through their hair or walking towards me as I try to make them laugh which usually does because I have no shame in acting or saying something ridiculous. It is all for the shot!
Thank you so much to Maggie for not only trusting me to take your senior pics, but coming back to Wahoo this spring for some cap and gown photos. I am so glad that I could be the one to capture these big moments in your life right now!
